I'm new. Where do I start reading?
This depends largely on which aspect of Deus Ex Machina you are most interested in. Just here for the ride in general? Check out the Story Directory for the full chronological order of the stories and start at the top.

More interested in the pantheon? I recommend starting with Gemini, followed by Promise of Night.

More interested in the mortals? Start with "The Puzzle Box" and continue in chronological order.

Only want to prep yourself for The Book of Luna? I highly recommend reading Promise of Night and
Honing the Blades, as they're the most directly connected to The Book of Luna,
and are the closest tonally to the main trilogy as well.
Do I need to read everything before reading The Book of Luna?
Nope, not at all! The Book of Luna is written to stand on its own. The stories you see here are simply to provide more context or buildup for certain characters or story elements within The Book of Luna. If you like reading more about the world of DEM, these stories are available to you. In general, DEM is designed to reward exploration and investigation. However much energy you wish to put in to understanding the universe is how much you will get out of it. Similarly, I make lore and character biographies available here on my website for those who enjoy a more encyclopedic approach. There is no right or wrong way to consume Deus Ex Machina, it really is play your way.
Are your stories released chronologically?
NO. This is the part that throws people for a loop, as I'll release stories out of order, focusing on different characters or story elements at different points in time. For the most part, I try to ground where the story is in the timeline in the story itself, so you'll know about when it's taking place in relation to the greater narrative. If you're particularly confused on this, you can check the Story Directory for the chronological timeline, or you can look at the World Timeline to see not just where the story slots into the full timeline, but also surrounding events that might impact it.

That said, currently all of my stories are considered prequels to The Book of Luna. I don't plan to release any stories from later in the timeline until after The Book of Luna's full release. You'll notice in the Story Directory that nothing is listed after The Book of Luna. That's not because I don't have stories planned for afterward, only because I don't want to spoil any of the events in Book 1 by teasing future stories!
Are all the stories canonical to Deus Ex Machina?
Yes. The only place that will ever mention AU (alternate universe) content would be my social media, or possibly my blog, but this will always be clearly labeled as AU. If it appears on the Story Directory, it's canon, whether the story is written/released or not. Likewise, everything on this page will always be canon.
I saw a character listed in the biographies that's not in any story. What's with that?
Just because I haven't written and/or released a story yet doesn't mean I haven't plotted it out. There are several side characters listed in the character biography section of my website that will eventually be introduced in future stories, whether that's an unreleased prequel or The Book of Luna. For now, you'll just have to wait and see when they eventually pop up!
You keep mentioning a trilogy. Please elaborate.
While there are several stories included in Deus Ex Machina, I separate it into two sections: the core story, and the side stories. The trilogy is the core story, everything else is side story. The first book in the trilogy, the start of the core of DEM, is The Book of Luna. There are two other books I plan to write, both just as long and complex as The Book of Luna. The trilogy is one cohesive storyline, which must be read in order. The side stories? Not so much.

What makes the trilogy unique is how expansive it is compared to the side stories. While my other stories might have up to 3 or 4 POVs in a given story, the trilogy features 10+ POVs in each book. Because of the number of POVs, each book in the trilogy is incredibly long, much longer than any of the side stories. The trilogy is meant to give equal weight to each character's part of the story as they all intertwine. Meanwhile, the side stories are meant to provide more depth to individual characters or storylines I don't have time to dive into in the main trilogy.

If you see me reference Book 1, Book 2, or Book 3, I'm referencing the trilogy. Book 1's official title is The Book of Luna. I have not officially released the titles of Book 2 or Book 3 (because of spoilers).
